The IFD-NET Backup Battery (IFD-BKB) is a specialized power management module designed by M.A.V. Avionic Division to provide emergency electrical power to IFD-NET flight instruments and other avionics in the event of a primary electrical system failure.
Core Functionality
The system acts as an "uninterruptible power supply" (UPS) for your cockpit.
- Automatic Charging: As long as the aircraft's main power is available, the device automatically maintains the charge of the connected backup battery.
- Instant Switching: If primary power is lost, the IFD-BKB switches to the backup battery instantly. This prevents the instruments from rebooting or losing data during a critical flight phase.
- Isolation during Start: It is recommended to isolate the avionics during engine start; however, the battery backup ensures that if you lose the alternator mid-flight, your primary flight displays remain operational.
Performance & Capacity
- Endurance: With a standard 12V / 2.3Ah battery, the system can power a typical "six-pack" configuration (6 IFD-NET 80mm devices + one avionic module) for approximately one hour.
- Voltage Compatibility: In aircraft with 24/28V systems, two 12V batteries should be connected in series.
- Maximum Load: The 2A limit is sufficient for multiple IFD-NET displays (which typically consume ~200-300mA each) but is not intended to power heavy loads like transponders or gear motors.
Important Maintenance Notes
- Battery Type: The module is specifically designed for lead batteries. It is not intended for Li-Ion or other chemistries unless specified by the manufacturer for that specific version.
- Deep Discharge: You should never allow the backup battery to discharge completely, as this can permanently damage the cells.
- Pre-Flight Charge: The IFD-BKB is a maintainer, not a heavy-duty charger. If a battery is completely flat, it should be charged with a dedicated workshop charger before being re-installed in the aircraft.
