The Fly Henry EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature) Sensor is a high-temperature thermocouple probe designed for use with Fly Henry engine monitoring instruments, such as the PPG Meter and FLY Meter. It is used to monitor the combustion temperature in the exhaust manifold, which is critical for tuning the fuel-air mixture and preventing engine damage.
Core Specifications
- Sensor Type: High-range thermocouple (Typically Type K, as indicated by the 0–1000°C range).
- Measurement Range: 0°C to 1000°C.
- Accuracy: High precision (±0.75% or approx. 2.2°C).
- Mounting Thread: Usually M8 x 1.0 mm or M6 x 1.0 mm, depending on the version.
- Cable Lengths: Commonly available in 45 cm, 50 cm, 80 cm, or 90 cm leads.
Key Features
- Materials: The probe is constructed from high-grade stainless steel or Inconel to withstand the extreme heat and corrosive environment of the exhaust stream.
- Response Time: Designed for rapid response to detect "lean-out" conditions (high EGT) instantly, allowing the pilot to adjust the throttle or mixture before piston damage occurs.
- Connection: Features a dedicated connector (often a white or specialized plug) designed to interface with the Fly Henry Measurement Module, ensuring a secure connection even in high-vibration environments.
Installation Options
For most Fly Henry setups on microlights or paramotors, the EGT sensor is installed in one of two ways:
- Threaded Bung: A stainless steel bung is welded into the exhaust pipe, and the sensor screws directly into it.
- Muffler Clamp (Adaptation): While Fly Henry prefers threaded sensors for a better seal, clamp-style fittings can be used if a weld-on bung is not feasible, though this is less common for their specific proprietary sensors.
Important Note for FLY Meter Users
The FLY Meter (2024 model) has four dedicated temperature inputs that can be toggled between CHT and EGT.
- If you are installing a new EGT sensor, you must activate the corresponding input in the Main Menu -> Temperature Sensors and set the label to "EGT."
- Always ensure the sensor tip is positioned in the centre of the exhaust gas stream (usually roughly 10-15cm from the cylinder head) for the most accurate reading.
